“Why’re you asking me so much about him?” The sharp look that Kevyn had noticed when she’d first arrived returned to Mrs. Pearson’s eyes. “Why isn’t Dak talking to me about this?”

Should she tell the older woman?

She could always make up a cover story, let her believe something nicer than the truth.

No. The truth was always best.

Even when it was unpleasant.

“Dak’s missing. I believe the man who helped you wasn’t really a fireman, but was after Dak.”

The woman stared at her for a moment, then slowly nodded. “That makes sense. Didn’t see a single firetruck out here when he brought me out. No one was out here. I asked him if he was sure there was a fire and he said yes. Like I said, I heard the alarms a few minutes later and people started coming out.”

“You said he pushed your wheelchair. Do you remember if he wore gloves?”

“Oh yes. They were rough on my skin.” Mrs. Pearson pointed at some chafed spots on her hands. “When you get to be my age, your skin gets terribly sensitive.”

Okay, so there likely wouldn’t be any fingerprints on the handles of the wheelchair. She’d still have them check it for prints, but it probably wouldn’t turn up anything useful.

“I expected him to at least come back for his wheelchair, but I haven’t seen him since he left me here.”

Kevyn snapped her attention from the chair to the woman sitting in it. “This isn’t your chair?”

“Nope. I don’t get around fast, but I can still walk.”

Forget prints. She’d have the lab run a full work-up on this chair now that she knew the unsub had brought it with him. “I’m going to need to take that chair with me when I leave.”

Mrs. Pearson started to rise, but Kevyn waved her back down.

“Not now. It might be a little while before they let you back inside, so please stay comfortable. But don’t let anyone else take it, okay?”

Wide eyes stared at her as the seriousness of the situation seemed to sink in. “I won’t let anyone touch it, honey. You really think Dak is in trouble?”

She hesitated. Protocol said to tell the woman nothing, but the blood had been found in her apartment. She’d learn the truth sooner or later.

Especially since her apartment was now a crime scene. She’d be the last to be allowed back into her home.

“We do. We found blood. In your apartment.”

“What?” Mrs. Pearson’s eyes bugged. “My apartment?”

“Yes. We believe Dak went to check on you and was ambushed. Likely by the fireman who assisted you.” And she used the word fireman quite loosely. “So you didn’t see the fireman again? Not even in passing?”

The older woman shook her head. “Honey, there were so many people moving around here that I probably missed him.”

No, he probably went out another door, one where he could smuggle Dak away undetected.

She really needed to see security footage from the parking lot and building.

She handed the woman her card. “If you think of anything, please ring me.
